Abstract Expressionism Begins

The first American avant-garde movement and deeply influenced by the Surrealist focus on tapping into the unconscious, Abstract Expressionism marked a transition from the hard-edged abstraction of the early twentieth century towards a more spontaneous and emotional form of self-expression. The movement is thought to have begun when Peggy Guggenheim commissioned Jackson Pollock’s Mural for her apartment.
