Allan Kaprow Begins Making ‘Environments’

Environments, precursors to “happenings” as well as the Performance and Installation Art of the ’60s-’70s, were large-scale, immersive installations intended to engage all of the senses of the viewer. Kaprow believed that art should be experienced rather than observed, and his Environments were designed to create an interactive and participatory experience for the viewer.
