Birth of Art Informel in France

Responding to the horrors of WWII, European artists rejected the artistic traditions of figurative and geometric work in favor of anti-compositional forms and gestural techniques. Along with the movement’s stylistic relative in North America, Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel espoused spontaneity and expression.
