The Bitcoin genesis block executed by Satoshi Nakamoto demonstrated the workability of Bitcoin as more than just a concept. As explained above, Bitcoin would go on to play a crucial role in the evolution of digital art by aligning with the net.art ethos of decentralization and anti-authoritarianism. This ethos resonated with digital artists who saw Bitcoin’s potential for anti-surveillance, bottom-up creative expression. Kevin McCoy, linking these philosophies, was among the artists exploring blockchain’s application in digital art, leading to early forms of NFTs and innovative projects like Bitchcoin. Nakamoto’s paper not only proposed a solution to digital currency’s double-spending problem but also challenged the traditional financial systems during a global crisis, embedding blockchain as a tool for artistic and financial disruption.
