The spiritual successor to the Bauhau closed after 24 years primarily due to financial difficulties. It had been opened in 1933 by John A. Rice, who hired the Bauhaus’s Josef Albers. The college’s faculty and staff over the years included some of the most impactful artists of the twentieth-century such as Anni and Josef Albers, Walter Gropius, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Robert Motherwell, Dorothea Rockburne, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Susan Weil, Franz Kline, Aaron Siskind, Willem and Elaine de Kooning and Mary Caroline Richards.
