Black Mountain College Opens

Black Mountain College was founded in North Carolina as an experimental liberal arts college with a focus on the arts, including music, visual arts, and creative writing. It became a seminal institution in the development of modernist art and education, hosting influential artists and thinkers such as John Cage, Anni and Josef Albers, Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg. Several former Bauhaus faculty members, such as the Alberses, joined the Black Mountain College faculty. The college adopted many of the Bauhaus’s principles of interdisciplinary collaboration, experimentation, and the integration of art and technology.
