This famous paper in the history of computer graphics outlines the breakthrough that was fractal rendering, which is still hugely important to this day. This seminal work explores the simulation of randomness in visual representation, leading to the creation of realistic natural phenomena such as clouds and landscapes. The paper laid the groundwork for rendering complex, organic structures through algorithmic techniques based on Mandelbrot’s fractals. By integrating stochastic processes into graphics, the paper revolutionized visual effects and paved the way for today’s sophisticated CGI techniques, deeply impacting film, gaming, design and, of course, digital generative art.
