In September, Ethereum released the Bellatrix upgrade to initiate “The Merge” process of transitioning from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. The relevance of the Merge for this story is that many artists refused to engage with Ethereum previously due to its ecological impact in particular. This shift significantly reduced the network’s energy consumption by approximately 99%, addressing those growing concerns over the environmental impact of its technology. The Merge also aimed to enhance the network’s scalability and security by replacing energy-intensive mining with a system where validators stake their Ether to participate in block creation.
