Facebook Embraces the Metaverse

In October, Facebook rebranded as Meta, signaling its strategic shift toward building a private metaverse—a virtual world blending social experiences, augmented reality and immersive environments. The moments is significant for this Timeline because it signifies that we are likely not even at the beginning in terms of people realizing the importance of digital ownership. When virtual reality becomes increasingly mixed with our physical reality, it’s not a far logical jump to suspect we will want these worlds customized to our specific aesthetic preferences, including the display of art work. Whether this company achieves its vision of a metaverse is unclear or even questionable, despite the fact that it’s extremely well capitalized and rich with personal data. The moment, however, signifies a step in the direction towards reality in what previous decades felt like science fiction. This particular announcement came at the Connect 2021 conference, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined Meta’s vision to evolve beyond 2D screens, creating interconnected digital spaces where users can interact, work and play in new, immersive ways. This rebranding marked a significant transformation in the company’s focus, positioning Meta as a major player in any attempts to create a new virtual world. What that ultimately unlocks for digital fine art and its ownership suggests a bright future.
