Founded by Alan Sutcliffe, George Mallen and John Lansdown, the Society (1968-1985) was formed “to encourage the creative use of computers and to allow the exchange of information in this area.” For decades CAS has aimed to advance the understanding of digital and electronic media’s role in the arts. It was initially founded in ‘68 by Alan Sutcliffe, George Mallen and John Lansdown after advising and participating in Cybernetic Serendipity. The original version would run until 1985. It experienced a renaissance in between 2002 and 2004 and continues to this day (2024). Dedicated to fostering creative computer use, it preserves the rich history of computer-generated art and is now even part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collections. As of 2024, CAS continues to promote digital media in contemporary practice, hosts events, exhibitions and an annual Electronic Visualisation & the Arts (EVA) conference.
