Google’s Alexander Mordvintsev Launches DeepDream

2015 stands as a monumental year in this story—up there with 1965 (digital art’s public beginnings) and 1995 (net.art)—as the year AI art properly took off. GANs had been introduced a year earlier and served as a primary catalyst along with this seminal moment, the launch of Google’s DeepDream. These events ensured 2015’s place in history with important work by AI legends Gene Kogan, Sougwen Chung, Alexander Mordvinstev, Mario Klingemann and more. As for DeepDream itself, On June 18, 2015, Google researchers Alexander Mordvintsev, Christopher Olah and Mike Tyka introduced it, transforming our understanding of neural networks. After a restless night, Mordvintsev conceptualized an algorithm that allowed neural networks to "dream.” By inputting images into a ConvNet and halting midway, he revealed the hidden layers' intricate patterns, producing surreal, psychedelic visuals. His breakthrough—along with the invention of GANs and advancements in text-to-image models—demonstrated the creative potential of AI and hinted at how it would come to dominate conversations in digital art. DeepDream’s high-profile launch at Google captivated the tech world, highlighting AI’s capability to generate art and offering profound insights into neural networks' inner workings.
