ImageNet’s semantic hierarchy and example-image tree, from the team’s 2009 VSS poster ImageNet: Construction and Analysis of a Large Scale Image Ontology. Li Fei-Fei, Jia Deng, Minh Do, Hao Su and Kai Li, Princeton University / ImageNet, 2009. Image source.

Conceived by Fei-Fei Li at Princeton University, ImageNet launched in 2009 as a pivotal image database aimed at enhancing machine learning capabilities in image recognition. Spanning 3.2 million annotated images at launch and over 14 million today, it established a new benchmark through the annual ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC), accelerating the adoption of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This tool for advancing computer vision played a significant role in the development of AI, GANs and AI art, making it one of the most impactful moments of the decade. ImageNet stands as perhaps the decade’s most meaningful contribution to the development of AI and AI art that would explode in the following decade.
