Muriel Cooper’s Information Landscapes Project, made with David Small and six others, featured in MoMA’s collection and unveiled at a 1994 TED talk, represented a pinnacle in her illustrious career. Information Landscapes defied traditional graphic design paradigms, exemplifying over four decades of research and experimentation. Cooper, a pioneering figure at MIT, reshaped design education with her visionary approach, founding the Visible Language Workshop in the Bauhaus tradition and designing the iconic MIT Press Logo. Her projects, such as Typography in Space and Personalized Galaxies of Information, celebrated multidimensionality and encouraged viewers to engage actively and explore nonlinearly.

Cooper legacy continued beyond her time, which unfortunately passed shortly after this talk, as John Maeda was the direct descendant of Cooper’s traditions at the VLW. He would found the Aesthetics and Computation Group at the MIT Media Lab, where students Ben Fry and Casey Reas developed Processing.
