Emanating from his tenure at the MIT Media Lab’s Aesthetics + Computation Group (ACG), Ben Fry’s isometricblocks (2002–2004) is a seminal work that marries generative art with genetic data visualization. The work showcases Fry’s brilliant software-based data visualization. Utilizing the nascent versions of Processing, this project offers a comparative visual analysis of genomes, transforming complex genetic information into an accessible and visually striking format. Developed during Fry’s doctoral research, isometricblocks integrates various analytical methods into a unified visual narrative, enhancing our comprehension of genetic differences. By making intricate genetic structures more perceptible, isometricblocks serves as a quintessential example of how art and science can intersect, using algorithmic artistry to cast light on complex scientific data now recognized and preserved within MoMA’s permanent collection.
