Jean Dubuffet’s Art Brut

Dubuffet founded the Compagnie de l’Art Brut to promote the study of Art Brut. A French term that translates as “raw art”, Art Brut rejected “art culturel” (cultural art) and embraced forms such as graffiti or naïve art made outside the academic tradition of fine art. This movement serves as a predecessor to early computer-generated art of the upcoming decades which also largely rejected formal art training.
