Jerobeam Fenderson and Hansi3D started Oscilloscope Music, a project focusing on audiovisual oscilloscope explorations; the OsciStudio software followed in 2017. Reminiscent of Mary Ellen Bute, Ben Laposky and Herbert W. Franke’s oscilloscope work from the early ’50s, OSCISTUDIO creates audiovisual music where the sound directly creates visuals. They achieve this by feeding the same audio signals sent to speakers into an analog oscilloscope’s X and Y inputs, generating intricate Lissajous figures. The pair’s work stands as an example of how work and equipment from digital art’s distant past could be reimagined.
