Light: Rafaël Rozendaal at MoMA

Among the final moments of 2024 is another of the world’s great museums and perhaps the most renowned modern art institution showcasing generative algorithms on its giant Garden Lobby screen with Light: Rafaël Rozendaal.

I spoke to Rozendaal about the opportunity and his illustrious career.

Known for treating code like paint, Rozendaal transforms the browser—and MoMA’s 25-foot screen—into a fluid canvas. His minimalist animations, designed to be accessible to anyone, anywhere, embody lightness in both concept and execution, with each piece occupying mere kilobytes. The exhibition highlights Rozendaal’s pioneering approach to generative art, emphasizing resolution-independent, future-proof works. By immersing viewers in shifting colors and forms, Light offers a digital meditation in a world of increasing complexity.
