December 19, 1996 marked the initial release of Macromedia Flash, a technology that paved the way rich graphics on the maturing web and for contemporary generative-web-based practices, pioneered by artists such as Joshua Davis, Yugo Nakamura, Brendan Dawes, James Paterson and LIA.

Flash, now a ubiquitous name in the annals of the web’s history, traces its roots back to a serendipitous meeting between Jonathan Gay and Charlie Jackson at a local Macintosh Users Group. Their 1993 brainchild, FutureWave Software, initially set its sights on pen computing. With the fading trend, they pivoted towards the burgeoning World Wide Web.

The culmination of their efforts was FutureSplash, a pioneering web animation tool released in May 1996. FutureSplash Animator empowered designers to craft animations with increased ease, while the accompanying FutureSplash Viewer allowed for playback on browsers.

When FutureSplash caught the attention of Netscape and Microsoft, its trajectory shifted dramatically. Netscape featured it as an extension, while Microsoft integrated it into MSN.com, catapulting FutureSplash into the public’s attention.

Recognizing its potential, Macromedia acquired FutureWave in December 1996, rebranding it as Macromedia Flash.
