1959
Minimalism Emerges with 16 Americans at MoMA

A rebuke of gestural art and extension of modern art’s abstraction, Minimalism emerged in the late ’50s with exhibitions such as Frank Stella’s Black Paintings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. But Dorothy Miller’s 16 Americans, also at MoMA, established the importance of the young movement.
