Monster Movie by Takeshi Murata

In the collection of SFMOMA and included in Casey Reas’s course 50 Years of Software Artists at UCLA, Takeshi Murata’s sub-four-minute digital video, Monster Movie was a revolutionary work in digital video art. It transformed a snippet from the 1981 B movie Caveman into a dynamic, disintegrating spectacle of digital forms. To achieve this, Murata applied datamoshing—a technique where he manipulates video compression—to dissolve and mutate traditional film imagery into a fluid mosaic of color and shape. This piece, characterized by its aggressive audio track and ceaseless visual transformation, critiques and manipulates the digital medium itself. Murata’s work exemplified a shift from static cinematic narratives to dynamic digital realms, challenging viewers' perceptions of continuity and identity in our digitizing times. Through Monster Movie, Murata both reflects and distorts the visual music and abstraction traditions in film, illustrating the transformative potential of digital tools while commenting on the ephemeral nature of digital identity.
