Another important example in the rise of Mass Media art, a Casey Reas precondition for NFTs, and net art, My boyfriend came back from the war by Olia Lialina is one of the most recognizable net art works. Russian artist Olia Lialina crafted My Boyfriend, a browser-based net-art piece consists of a nonlinear narrative using nested frames and grainy GIF images. The work’s interactive hypertext storytelling unfolds as users click hyperlinks, splitting the frame into smaller frames and revealing fragments of a couple’s reunion after a nameless military conflict. Lialina’s innovative use of frames within frames creates a mosaic-like experience, reminiscent of early silent movies. Lialina’s work, self-described as a “netfilm,” merges cinematic narrative techniques with HTML code, merging web and cinema. My Boyfriend stands as a significant example of art distributed solely through the Internet, showcasing Lialina’s mastery of spatial and temporal montage.
