Painterly Architectonic by Liubov Popova

Helping to introduce Cubism and Futurism into Russian art after visits to France and Italy before WWI, this piece is part of a series that demonstrates Popova’s Suprematist style. Popova, a pioneer of geometric abstraction and Suprematism, treated planes “like solid material entities,” laying them atop one another to create a radically new artistic language. Around fifteen years later, this layered-plane style would reemerge as Concrete art.
