Thomas and John Knoll began their journey to revolutionize digital image editing with the development of Photoshop. Originally conceived as a way to showcase grayscale images on a monochrome display, this software would go on to redefine the creative possibilities of visual art and photography. Adobe licensed the software two years later, in 1989, and subsequent versions of Photoshop continued to innovate. The introduction of features such as layers, filters and an easy-to-use interface changed the way professionals and beginners approached image editing. Photoshop democratized image manipulation by enabling anyone with a computer to become a digital artist or photo editor. This is in stark contrast to the additional levels of difficulty previously required in terms of specialized coding knowledge, which could take years or decades to master. Since its inception, Photoshop has become an essential tool across diverse industries, from graphic design and advertising to photography and web design. Its name has become synonymous with image editing, and its impact on visual culture is immeasurable.
