In Tyler Hobbs’s first exhibition, Progress, the artist examines the profound impact of computers and technology on contemporary life, emphasizing the necessity for artists to directly engage with these tools. These programmatic works further demonstrate what this Timeline has shown for decades: interacting with computers in their native form can produce uniquely crafted artwork that is inherently infused with the essence of the latest technology. Hobbs had been creating and sharing his practice online since 2014. Progress can thus be seen as a literal marker for Hobbs’s artistic development over the previous 4-5 years. The work showcases the culmination of Hobbs’s thought and development up to this point, a key moment in generative art in the 2010s.
