Sound Machines by MoMA and Feral File
Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst, Play from Memory #20, 2024. In Le Random’s collection.

This online blockchain-based exhibition by MoMA and Feral File brought together seven artists to explore the intersections of sound, technology and art. Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst’s Play from Memory examined human and machine learning in music, while Yoko Ono’s SOUND PIECE V (1996/2024) created an on-chain archive of laughter.

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s CANCEL YOURSELF (2024) reimagined agency through an interactive soundscape and 0xDEAFBEEF’s PAYPHONE (2024) explored telephony and tokenization.

Honoring MoMA’s legacy of sound art, extending to great curators like Barbara London, the exhibition showcased how new technologies—from generative AI to blockchains—can reimagine auditory experience.
