Sun Microsystems Release Java 1.0

Despite initiating the project in June 1991, on January 23, 1996, JavaSoft, the newly formed operating company of Sun Microsystems, released Java 1.0, marking a significant milestone in the history of software development. Java 1.0 introduced the “write-once-run-everywhere” capability, enabling developers and artists to create platform-independent applications and algorithms. With components like the Java Applet Viewer and class libraries included, Java 1.0 quickly gained traction in the software and internet communities. Its widespread adoption by companies like IBM and Netscape solidified its position as the de facto standard for networked applications, shaping the future of software development as well as creative expression with code. The release of Java is particularly important to digital generative art’s history as the Processing creative coding language used the Java language.
