Roman Verostko, noted for his pioneering work such as The Magic Hand of Chance (1982), organized the Art & Algorithm Symposium at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1991 (February 23-24). This was key proto-Algorist event, named “Mind & Machine,” celebrating the intersection of art and computational techniques. With a name juxtaposing words like “mind” and “machine” in early 1991, along with the work of evolutionary art pioneers like Sims and Latham at the time, this can be seen as proto-artificial intelligence art event. The conference included an audio-visual exhibition titled “Images of the Unseen From the Worlds of Art & Science,” which showcased works by 23 artists and scientists from six nations. Among them are pioneers such as Vera Molnár (Algorithmic drawing, 1990), Donna Cox, Char Davies, Samia Halaby, Hans Dehlinger, Mark Wilson, Jean Pierre Hebert, Yoichiro Kawaguchi and William Latham.
