Another important postmodern text, published in French in 1979, this one was harshly critical of computers and particularly their use in art. The book argued that computers and society’s adaptation to them would have long-term negative consequences. Grant Taylor in When the Machine Made Art explains how Lyotard bleakly argued that the computerization of society would “reduce society to an efficient system, founded on the best possible input/output calculation.”
