Generative Art Timeline · Chapter 10: On-Chain Era (2020s)
2021
theVERSEverse Founded

In November, a group of women poets established theVERSEverse NFT poetry gallery. The group celebrates poetry and text’s long-standing role in the history of generative expression, drawing from the legacies of artists like Hugo Ball, Christopher Strachey and Yoko Ono. The poets of theVERSEverse are Ana María Caballero, Sasha Stiles, Kalen Iwamoto and Elisabeth Sweet.
The gallery creates literary experiences that reimagine how we consume text-based creativity in a world increasingly confronted with zeros and ones. As this Timeline has referenced many times, text—with its set rules—has often predated visual aleatoric experimentation, a legacy theVERSEverse excitingly highlights.
Le Random is grateful that the poets have a strong connection to our Editorials and this Timeline.
Stiles is the only other co-author of this Timeline, writing dozens of the 1000+ moments.
Stiles also spoke to this author, Peter Bauman (Monk Antony) and Le Random’s Collection Lead Conrad House to discuss her digital poetry practice and the historical roots of generative text for Le Random Editorials.
Sweet has authored two articles on Le Random Editorials. The first was our fifth-ever piece, “Generations of Verse,” which examined the history of generative text. The second, “machine rêverie,” is a fantastic conversation with artist aurèce vettier.
Ana María Caballero has contributed a piece to Le Random Editorials. When prompted to use an Editorial page as a blank canvas, she chose to share the details of her project, Paperwork.
