1980
Traditionally Trained Artist, Mark Wilson, Buys Microcomputer to Make Art

A representational beginning to the decade, which would be responsible for the explosion of “digital art” due to the emerging prevalence of computers and digital devices becoming smaller and entering homes. Besides the micro effect on artists, on a macro level, the impact of these devices cannot be overstated. Devices such as the VHS machine, the Apple II and the Atari 2600 would revolutionize the personal relationship between humanity and digital devices. Wilson, a pioneer of digital art, began his career as a traditionally trained artist. In 1980, he purchased a microcomputer, taught himself programming and started producing plotter drawings. His work today is featured in the collection at the V&A. This marks an important example in the development of generative art that would symbolize the 1980s: the increased accessibility of computers.
