TV Buddha remains one of Paik’s signature works, a video sculpture consisting of a seated Buddha facing a television screen where it watches an image of itself. The work touches on themes of surveillance, East and West, past and present, religion and technology and the viewer’s role in an artwork. TV Buddha confronts the viewer with the juxtaposition of an ancient statue and its real-time image on a television screen, exploring the relationship between tradition and technology. TV Garden, another seminal video installation by Paik which was staged at the Guggenheim in 2000, consists of densely placed live plants with TV screens hidden throughout. The work merges technology and nature by surrounding viewers with a forest of televisions, contrasting the digital and physical realms. These immersive environments aimed to challenge traditional notions of art and introduced the concept of interactive and multi-sensory experiences. The groundbreaking installations not only showcased the creative potential of technology in art but also laid the foundation for the exploration of generative systems, interactivity and the fusion of digital and analog mediums that characterize digital generative art today.
