Launched in the summer of 2006, just two years after the initial release of Facebook’s rising popularity, 2006 served as a critical year in the development of the social media-dominated period that would follow and in which we still largely live nearly twenty years later. Just look at where we are promoting the release of this chapter. It’s Twitter. As for the history itself, in March 2006, Jack Dorsey, alongside co-founders Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams, conceptualized Twitter as a text-based communication platform during a brainstorming session at Odeo, a struggling podcast company. Originally named “twttr” after a trend of dropping vowels to secure domain names, Twitter was birthed from the necessity to pivot Odeo’s business following Apple’s entry into podcasting. The first tweet, “just setting up my twttr,” was sent by Dorsey on March 21, 2006. This marked the inception of Twitter, setting the stage for its massive future global impact on Web2 and Web3, as well as for artists, collectors and community members to share, collaborate and communicate in a global village.
