The early ’90s fascination with virtual reality continued with an exhibition at none other than the Guggenheim. The Guggenheim Museum’s Virtual Reality: An Emerging Medium was an Intel Digital Education & Arts Program event. Curators were initially uncertain of the shows reception but the exhibition became a sensation, selling out daily and capturing global media attention. Reflecting on art history, it emphasized VR’s profound impact, similar to Renaissance linear perspective. Notable works include Jenny Holzer’s interactive World I and World II, which challenges communication assumptions, and Thomas Dolby’s Virtual String Quartet, which provides dynamic soundscapes. This event highlighted the intense fascination with VR technology in the early ’90s despite being several decades early in terms of a commercially viable product.
