Generative Art Timeline · Chapter 8: Tooling Era (2000s)
2007
Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles

Organized by MOCA Curator Connie Butler, this was the first major museum exhibition to comprehensively examine the global impact and legacy of feminist art from 1965 to 1980. This pivotal era, marked by intense feminist activism and creativity, is explored through a diverse array of media including painting, sculpture, photography, film, video and performance. The exhibition features works from approximately 120 artists across 21 countries, highlighting the intercontinental connections and themes that emerged from feminist art practice during this period. The exhibition included important digital, generative and participatory works by women artists such as Lynn Hershman Leeson, Yoko Ono and Yvonne Rainer respectively.
