Waiting Room by Mark Napier is an innovative exploration of digital space and collaborative art, engaging 50 online users in a shared creative experience that bridges the realms of net.art and proto-AI art. This networked, interactive artwork serves as a midpoint between net.art and the nascent AI art movement, transforming participants' actions into integral components of a dynamic, evolving canvas. In Waiting Room, users' interactions—clicks, movements, and decisions—catalyze shifts in the artwork’s mood, color, and form, creating an ever-changing visual narrative. Each participant’s input introduces new shapes or shadows, suggesting architecture or dissolving light and encapsulating a sense of anticipation akin to that in physical waiting rooms. Through this collaborative digital environment, Waiting Room emerges as a living artwork, reflecting a collective artistic will and illustrating the potential for shared creativity from human-machine interaction.
