Warren S. McCulloch and Walter Pitts publish A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity

This influential paper holds immense importance in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), showing that neural networks could perform logical operations and suggested that the brain might work like a digital computer. The paper presented a formal model of neural networks, demonstrating how complex cognitive processes could be understood through logical and mathematical principles. Their work proved foundational to the field of computational neuroscience, inspiring subsequent research in AI and machine learning. By bridging the gap between biology and computation, McCulloch and Pitts provided a framework for simulating intelligent behavior, influencing the development of AI algorithms and architectures. In papers from 1945-1952, McCulloch and Pitts would continue developing the mathematical theory of the mind.
