One of this story’s greatest legends. Kawaguchi will go on to win the 2010 ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement. But his creative career began around this time in the late ’70s.

In 1975 Kawaguchi, one of Japan’s most revered generative artists and animators, began developing his famous GROWTH Model, a procedural algorithm that mimics organic growth and reproduction.

Continuing to work with organic forms throughout his career, Kawaguchi showed his organic growth animations at SIGGRAPH from 1982.

Kawaguchi’s GROWTH model—described as “a self-organizing approach to developing a formative algorithm of a complex life form”—in many ways pioneered artificial life and evolutionary art. His work comes nearly a decade before fellow Artificial Life pioneers William Latham and Karl Sims.

Kawaguchi goes widely unrecognized as an artificial life pioneer despite this early work from the ’70s in the budding field.
