Zach Lieberman Begins Daily Instagram Animations

Like Manolo and Takawo before him, Zach Lieberman began the practice of doing daily animations on Instagram in 2016. Working mostly in openFrameworks, the toolkit he co-created, and inspired by Reza Ali’s daily sketches, Lieberman explored geometry, animation, gesture and graphic form on the social media giant. His stepdaughter’s feedback influenced his work, even making it a collaborative process. This daily practice allowed Lieberman to experiment and push the bounds of his ideas and techniques. By the end of the year, he had created around 1,800 sketches. Like Takawo, his work marked a significant contribution to digital art and would inspire many future artists to explore similar creative routines. The work highlights the impact that social media has had on both the consumption and creation of art in the decade following its rapid rise.
