First exhibition of Fauvism

The shocking exhibition held in Paris at the Salon d’Automne, featured Fauvist work characterized by bold and experimental use of color, including Henri Matisse’s Woman with a Hat. Fauvism opened the door for more extreme approaches to abstraction. Artists, such as Matisse, innovated with color, inspiring countless others, including Kandinsky’s Blue Rider Group, Color Field painters and Expressionists. The movement’s incorporation of impulse and spontaneity also led the way for greater experimentation with randomness in art. This laid the groundwork for artists to further explore non-representational forms, where chance and randomness could play an even more prominent role.
