From the Archives: Art and Technology at LACMA, 1967–1971 offered insights into the museums influential Art & Technology Program and exhibition, which was mentioned previously on this timeline (1971). Curated by Jennifer King, the exhibition features photographs, prints, artist books and proposals from twelve artists, including Channa Horwitz and Robert Rauschenberg. Originally conceived by Maurice Tuchman in the late ’60s, the program paired artists with corporations like IBM and Disney, fostering innovative artworks using materials like Mylar and lasers. Despite bureaucratic challenges and Vietnam War controversies, the program’s legacy endures, as evidenced by this show and 2023’s Coded at LACMA. The show demonstrates not only the lengthy institutional interest from LACMA in art and technology, but also emphasizes a time when the distinction between traditional and new media artists began blurring.
