YouTube was created by three former PayPal employees and bought by Google, announced 9 October and completed 13 November 2006, for $1.65 billion in what some have described as “the best tech deal ever.” The move signifies for the sake of this timeline, both the peak of Web2’s dominance and the ever-continuing rise of mass-media art. This precondition for NFTs, according to Casey Reas, began in earnest with the appearance of digital media devices in the home, like early video and music players (e.g., VHS and tape players) in the late ’70s and early ’80s. The purchase of YouTube by Google signified another giant step in mass media art’s decades-long development.
