In December, the art world and, especially the generative and digital art communities, bid farewell to the Grande Dame, Vera Molnár, a pioneering figure in generative, systems and algorithmic art.

This author, Peter Bauman, wrote “Molnár’s Paris,” taking a look at the artist’s storied life spent mostly in the French capital.

Born in 1924, but moving to Paris in 1947 after WWII, the Hungarian artist was a trailblazer in merging human creativity with computational precision, coining the term and concept machine imaginaire to describe her innovative approach. Molnár’s work, spanning over six decades, explored the symbiosis between hand-drawn elements and algorithmic systems, with intense and prolonged interest, leaving a lasting mark on what the digital could achieve.
