2025 saw New York’s grip as the epicenter of digital art tighten. If the last decades saw the city’s gallery center of gravity shift to Chelsea, then maybe the digital scene is reclaiming the Lower East Side.

On the institutional side, there was excitement, most notably for the announcement of Canyon. The venue opens in 2026 as a “40,000-square-foot contemporary art space devoted to video, sound, performance, and other forms of durational art.”

The gallery scene was more of a mixed bag, due to changing collector habits and an art market scrambling to recalibrate. Okay, bad news first. Words like “burnout” and “old model” were common in describing a rash of gallery shutterings around the world. New York was impacted too with the closings of Venus Over Manhattan and CLEARING, among others. While not a gallery per se, auction house Christie’s also closed its digital art department in September 2025.

Now for the good news: the scene saw the April openings of both HEFT and SuperRare’s Offline. They joined galleries like bitforms, a decades-long stalwart, and the excellent Nguyen Wahed to solidify the Lower East Side as perhaps the global center of permanently displayed digital art. In the neighborhood is also, of course, Rhizome and the newly reopening New Museum to secure the claim. We covered the city’s digital scene in our "New York City Digital Art Guide.”
