2021 saw a Big Bang-level outburst of work, creativity and pixels surely more than any other single year—although perhaps surpassed just the year later. 2021 was remarkable, a singular event in human history and time is needed to filter through the overwhelming level of outstanding works from the year. Yet, certain work did stand out, largely from Art Blocks and fxhash, including: monogrid by Kim Asendorf Iskra Velitchkova’s Collection: Generative nature. (Stunning first blockchain work on HEN that includes her first birds.) Mimizu by qubibi (Kazumasa Teshigawara’s worms) CSRSNT by Casey Reas Phototaxis by Casey Reas (The core of the code dates back to Reas’s 2001 work exhibited at bitforms in New York.) Hugs on Tape by LoVid (Acquired by the Whitney in 2023) Farbteiler by Erik Swahn Dragons by William Mapan DEAFBEEF Series 0: Synth Poems by Deafbeef Series 4: Glitchbox by Deafbeef Vol. 2, Series 0: Caves by Deafbeef Apparations by Aaron Penne Fragments of an Infinite Field by Monica Rizzolli Trossets by Anna Carreras De/Frag by Toxi Time Allocation Zero and minus by P1xelfool Skulptuur by Piter Pasma Gazers by Matt Kane Reading a book by Kim Asendorf Loom by Andreas Rau Contrapuntos by Marcelo Soria-Rodríguez Polygona Nervosa by Golan Levin Returns by Leander Herzog Travess Smalley begins Pixelrug series Asemica by Emily Edelman, Dima Ofman & Andrew Badr Terraforms by Mathcastles (Innovative on-chain land art) Dotcom Séance by Simon Denny Arcadia Inc. by Cezar Mocan (Lumen Prize Student Award Winner)
