Perlin Noise Invented

First developed in 1983 and formally described in 1995, Ken Perlin’s groundbreaking invention of Perlin Noise marked a watershed moment in the history of computer graphics and digital generative art that reverberates to this very day (just check out the latest release on fxhash). Perlin, a computer scientist and computer graphics pioneer, created this algorithm to generate naturalistic textures for Disney’s animated film "Tron.” Perlin Noise quickly became a foundational tool in computer graphics, offering a method for simulating intricate, organic patterns such as clouds, fire, and terrain. Its ability to create complex, visually appealing randomness with controllable characteristics transformed the artistic and technical possibilities of digital art and animation. Perlin noise played a vital role in shaping the aesthetic of digital landscapes, making it an essential tool for artists, game developers and filmmakers. Artist Emily Xie added this to the author, Peter Bauman, about Perlin: “Ken Perlin develops Perlin Noise, a gradient noise function that generates natural-appearing randomness. It was a huge stepping stone for graphical computing, allowing simulation of the natural world with realistic surfaces, patterns and textures. Perlin noise has been integral to generative art and is considered a foundational technique of the space.”
