QQL by Tyler Hobbs and Dandelion Wist Mané

In September, Tyler Hobbs and Dandelion Mané introduced their co-creative QQL, a collaborative generative art project, empowering collectors to curate their own unique pieces from the pair’s versatile algorithm.

The collection was novel in the way a highly successful artist was willing to experiment with a demonstration one of the core principles of generativity—cession of control but also authorship. The question of authorship extends ideas of groups such as GRAV who de-emphasized the individual creator, stressing collective creation.

The project itself consisted of 999 Mint Passes, holders of which could then mint their selected outputs. This allowed for hundreds of community members to contribute to a dynamic, evolving collection underscoring communal engagement.

The project anticipated the increased creative exploration of co-creation, which this author, Peter Bauman, wrote about for Right Click Save in early 2023. This shift included the launch of fxparams in March, 2023, which showed that the wider community was interested in exploring and embracing co-creative art.
