In May, the cryptocurrency market experienced one of its worst runs to date. It was caused by the sudden catastrophic collapse of the cryptocurrency and Web3 organization Terra, which included LUNA and stable coin UST. The event sent shockwaves through the entire Web3 community and portended a more muted period in the space after unprecedented levels of interest and hysteria in the previous 18 months. Central to this downfall were UST, Terra’s algorithmic stablecoin, and the Anchor protocol, which offered unsustainably high yields to attract deposits. As concerns over the stability of the system grew, a massive run on UST ensued, leading to the dramatic devaluation of Terra’s native token, LUNA. The implosion wiped out billions in value, exposing critical vulnerabilities in decentralized finance (DeFi) and raising questions about transparency and investor protection in the crypto space.
