Subscapes by Matt DesLauriers

By April 23, when Matt DesLauriers released Subscapes, 2021-as-we-know-it was already taking shape with the Beeple sale, Art Blocks and HEN in the rearview mirror. Yet Subscapes on Art Blocks Curated was another generative art project that, in just a few month’s time, would reach legendary status. The hype for these early Art Blocks reached a peak a few months later, at the end of August, recording hundreds of ETH in volume per day. Comprising 650 unique on-chain iterations, each piece visualizes an otherworldly landscape inspired by topographic maps and hand drawn strokes. The outputs paradoxically appear at once natural, alien and mechanical, demonstrating DesLauriers’s mastery of his digital aesthetic.
