Gordon Pask. An Approach to Cybernetics. 1961

An Approach to Cybernetics by Gordon Pask is a foundational text in the field of cybernetics, which explores the principles of information and control in complex systems. Pask presents the concept of “learning machines” in the book. These are machines capable of acquiring knowledge and modifying their behavior based on that knowledge, similar to a pupil-teacher relationship. Pask argues that these machines should not be designed as fixed, predetermined systems, but rather should be allowed to learn and adapt in response to feedback from their environment. The book also covers the main areas of cybernetics such as feedback, communication, and learning, and argues that these concepts are fundamental to understanding both natural and artificial systems. The book is based on Pask’s own experience designing the responsive machines he describes, such as the Musicolour (1953–57).
