This autonomous kinetic installation explores self-organization and emergent complex behavior based on a reimagination of cybernetic art in the twenty-first century. Comprising 1250 stepper motors arranged in a two-by-two-meter grid, each motor is equipped with a white acrylic pointer. These pointers move in response to alternating current, initially in random directions, reversing upon collision. This interaction creates complex, evolving patterns on the installation’s surface, reflecting non-hierarchical communication and collective behavior. Inspired by Alvin Toffler’s notion of reassembling fragmented problems, Baecker’s work serves as a contemporary synthesis of cybernetic, kinetic and generative art, thus paying homage to three critical roots of all digital art, all mentioned many times in this Timeline.
